🇫🇮 Cross-Cultural Scaffolding: Gamifying the Finnish-Taiwanese Dialogue

How do we design educational tools to facilitate authentic, cross-cultural discourse? In this week’s ERG session, we had the privilege of hosting Mr. Otto, a software engineer from Finland.

To overcome potential language barriers and lower the affective filter, I developed a custom HTML-based interactive tool inspired by Japanese Karuta (花牌) and memory-matching mechanics. This "Gamified Scaffolding" successfully guided our dialogue, allowing us to seamlessly navigate complex socio-cultural phenomenons—comparing Finnish sauna norms and digital tool adoption with Taiwan's workplace dynamics and social indirectness.

A major highlight was our Geography major, Udella, delivering a full-English presentation on how Taiwan’s topology and folk customs shape its infrastructure—a brilliant demonstration of interdisciplinary Phenomenon-based Learning. We concluded the session at the intersection of engineering and cultural anthropology: gifting Otto a pack of "Kuai Kuai" (乖乖), Taiwan’s unique tech-talisman for keeping hardware running smoothly! This session reaffirmed that EdTech’s true pedagogical affordance lies in bridging human experiences.
